As many of you know, we have had an unprecedented number of veterinary emergencies since September, 2024.  More than the last 5 years combined!  With a large herd of 40 senior horses, we typically have an surprisingly low incident rate. When it rains it pours!

Clyde had a stall accident resulting in a life-threatening injury to his shoulder joint. He was in the ICU for 3 weeks. He was not expected to survive or ever fully recover.  He defied medicine and not only survived, he IS fully recovered to perfect soundness.  His bill totaled more than $18,000 and we owe $7,400.

Mixo had two colics within two weeks and spent a total of 5 days in ICU. He is fully recovered and his generous prior owner paid all of his bills. Paid in full.

Gunner had a mysterious injury - a deep laceration to his neck that nicked his jugular vein and damaged the saliva gland. He was definitely not expected to survive surgery, but he did! He his home and 90% recovered. It will take time for the salivary gland to repair itself, but he is out of the woods and will make a full recovery. His bill was partially paid by two prior owners. The amount still owing is $3,000.

Rio had a large mass removed from his sinus. They removed as much as possible but could not get all if it- one area was very close to his brain. Samples were sent to pathology to find out the type of cancer - it seems to be slow growing. The plan forward. We don't know how fast it will grow back - could be months, maybe a year, but he is already more comfortable. Rio, who is an otherwise healthy, "young" 20, will come home as soon as possible to live out whatever time he has with his family and herd. We'll be watching his quality of life very closely.  He has fought and worked hard to get well - he deserves to enjoy his last days being loved and spoiled. You can be sure I will make every single day his absolute best day - which is hard to top! He's had a pretty darn good life.

Yeager had a simple sinus infection. At WSU they drilled a small hole to flush out the sinus cavity.

These five horse's journeys are a powerful reminder of resilience, hope, and the irreplaceable role that animals play in our healing and growth. Their stories aren't just about overcoming injury and illness, it's a testament to the power of second chances, the strength found in community, and the unspoken bond between humans and animals that can change lives in ways words cannot capture.

Through their work at Second Chance Ranch, these horses, along with the rest of the herd, have been captivating hearts and changing lives, a beacon of hope, a catalyst for change, and a life-saving companion for many facing their darkest moments.

It's impossible to put a price on the invaluable contributions they have made to our Suicide Intervention, Military Support Group, and kids/family programs. The impact is truly immeasurable.  As you all have rallied to support these cherished therapy horses, we're not just funding their recovery, we're investing in a legacy of hope, healing, and transformation that he represents.

No gift is too small. Any amount you can contribute will make an impact on this cause.  THANK YOU for your generosity and kindness toward Clyde!

Any donations that surpass the cost of current vet bills will be spent on veterinary needs of our other horses (Clyde is part of a herd of 43 retired sport horses).
